    Antioxidant

    Flavonoids and isoflavonoid substances in alfalfa extract can eliminate free radicals in the chain initiation stage in the antioxidant reaction as well as directly capture free radicals in the free radical reaction chain and block the free radical chain reaction through phenolic hydroxyl groups. Flavonoids and isoflavones substances have a strong antioxidant function, can remove reactive oxygen species in the body, protect lipids, proteins, and chromosomes in the human body from reactive oxygen species attack, prevent cellular lesions, enhance immunity, and delay aging.

     

    Hypolipidaemia

    Alfalfa extract has the effect of lowering the levels of TC and TG in hyperlipidaemic rats and reducing the degree of liver lesions in hyperlipidaemic rats.

     

    Improving the Quality of Livestock Products

    British and German scientists found that feeding alfalfa extract rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids to cattle can increase the content of long-chain n-3 fatty acids such as conjugated linoleic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in beef. The experimental grouping scheme was as follows: 1) straw and concentrates group (S-CC); 2) straw, concentrates and 2 000 IU VE/kg alfalfa extract group (S-PXC); 3) green storage feed group (GS); 4) green storage feed and 75 g alfalfa extract/kg hay group (GS-LPX); and 5) green storage feed and 150 g alfalfa extract/kg hay group (GS HPX).

     

    Supplementary feeding of alfalfa extract with concentrates and silage increased the n-3 fatty acid content of tenderloin and had a significant (P < 0.05) favorable effect on the ratio of n-6:n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids without adversely affecting the organoleptic quality of the tenderloin.

     

    Anti-Inflammatory

    Alfalfa extract can have a significant inhibitory effect on tissue swelling in the early stage of inflammation, and can also inhibit tissue proliferation and granulation in the late stage of inflammation, showing good anti-inflammatory effects.
